Wrap-up Of OCF Provincial Difficulty Championships; Regionals is Next!

Over the weekend of April 5th & 6th, Grand River Rocks in Kitchener hosted the 2014 OCF Provincial Difficulty Championships. 84 climbers battled the two Qualifying routes on the Saturday, with many advancing to Semi-finals Sunday morning, and the top climbers going on to Finals Sunday afternoon. It was a very well-run comp, thanks to the countless volunteers and a great hosting job by Grand River Rocks. The detailed results of the weekend’s comp can be viewed at https://my.climbontario.ca/dates.php?id=22.

As this was the finale of the 2013-14 OCF Series, we also presented awards to our Series winners, including medals to the top 3 climbers over the season series in each category, and the Ontario Cup to each Series Champion. Each medal winner also received a MEC gift card, and each Series Champion received a Champion Pass, granting them free climbing forĀ  all of June-August at each of the following gyms (excluding membership credit at their home gym):

  • The Boiler Room, Kingston
  • Boulderz, Toronto
  • Boulderz West, Etobicoke (opening July 1)
  • Climber’s Rock, Burlington
  • Coyote Rock Gym, Ottawa
  • Grand River Rocks, Kitchener
  • Guelph Grotto
  • Peaks, St Catharines
  • Rock Oasis, Toronto
  • True North Climbing, Toronto

The final 2013-14 OCF Series Standings can be found at https://archive.climbontario.ca/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/2013-14-OCF-StandingsFinal.pdf. We congratulate the 11(!) Series Champions:

D Category: Indiana Chapman and Iain Hill

C Category: Estella Lamarche-Dykeman and Zach Richardson

B Category: Catherine Carkner and Jack Wyett

A Category: Beth Vince and Nathan Smith/Lucas Uchida (tie!)

Junior Category: Pia Graham and Paul Genyk-Berezowsky

That ends the OCF Series, and for those climbers in D category, it’s the end of the competitive season in Canada. The older Youth Categories, as well as the Open adult category, are gearing up for Eastern Regionals, to be held April 19th & 20th at True North Climbing. All competitors must have CEC National Athlete Memberships in order to compete at Regionals, but there are no other eligibility requirements. Event info is available at https://www.facebook.com/events/1406256342968376/?ref=2&ref_dashboard_filter=upcoming, and registration is open at https://my.climbontario.ca/dates.php?id=24.

And as is always the case, volunteers are needed to make sure that Eastern Regionals is a success. Contact info@truenorthclimbing.com if you can help out as:

  • a judge (Judging Clinic will be held Friday April 18th at 7pm)
  • a belayer (Belaying at a Competition Clinic will be held Friday April 11th at 7pm). The main need is for qualified lead belayers.
  • an Isolation Zone monitor or runner (no advance training required!)

Volunteers will be fed and appreciated, and there will be a prize raffle for volunteers only. Prizes include 2 tickets to the 2014 Bouldering World Cup to be held May 31/June 1 in Hamilton!
